₹1 lakh today, ₹2 lakh in 115 months

That is the whole idea of Kisan Vikas Patra. You don’t choose a tenure. You choose an amount, and the rate decides how long it takes to double. At 7.5%, the rate for October to December 2026, that is 115 months, or 9 years 7 months.

Say Priya’s parents put ₹5 lakh into KVP for her wedding, which is still around ten years away. The certificate pays ₹10 lakh at maturity, and half of that is interest. No forms to renew, no rate to track.

Where 115 months comes from

KVP compounds interest once a year. The doubling period is the number of months it takes for the money to reach twice its size at that rate:

Months to double = 12 × ln 2 ÷ ln(1 + rate ÷ 100)

At 7.5% this comes to 115.01, rounded to 115. Along the way, ₹1 lakh is worth about ₹1,43,563 after 5 years and ₹1,91,724 after 9 years, before it touches ₹2 lakh. The rate on the day you buy holds till maturity. If you have an older certificate bought at another rate, enter that rate to see its own doubling time.

What KVP doesn’t give you

A tax break. KVP has no 80C deduction, and the interest is taxed at your slab rate. So in a high slab, the money doubles on paper but less of the gain stays with you.

If saving tax is the goal, NSC pays 7.7% for 5 years and counts for 80C in the old regime. If you want a monthly payout instead of one big amount at the end, look at the Post Office MIS.

Need the money before it doubles?

115 months is long, but you’re not stuck for all of it. You can cash a KVP after 2 years 6 months. The Post Office pays a lower value for an early exit, so the money won’t have doubled. Treat it as an emergency door, not part of the plan.

Frequently asked questions

In how many months does KVP double money?

115 months, or 9 years 7 months, at the current 7.5% for October to December 2026. The period comes from the rate, so if the rate changes, new certificates take a different time to double. Yours stays as bought.

Does KVP give a tax benefit under 80C?

No. KVP has no 80C deduction, and the interest is taxed at your slab rate. If you want a Post Office certificate that counts for 80C in the old regime, look at NSC instead.

Can I cash KVP before maturity?

Yes, after 2 years 6 months. You get a lower value than at maturity, set by the Post Office, so the money will not have doubled if you exit early. It works as an emergency exit, not a plan.

What is the minimum and maximum amount for KVP?

Minimum ₹1,000, with no upper limit. But you need to give PAN for ₹50,000 or more, and proof of income if you put in ₹10 lakh or more.

KVP or NSC: which is better?

NSC pays 7.7% for 5 years and counts for 80C in the old regime, but is locked till maturity. KVP pays 7.5% and takes 115 months to double, with no tax benefit, but can be cashed after 2.5 years.
